¶ In januari 1918, drie maanden na het verschijnen van De Stijl, begon het Amsterdamse kunstgenootschap Architectura et Amicitia met de publicatie van het tijdschrift Wendingen. Drijvende kracht achter dit project was de Nederlandse architect Hendricus Theodorus Wijdeveld. Ook was hij de vormgever en, tot aan zijn vertrek in 1925, de hoofdredacteur van het blad. Het tijdschrift was ogenschijnlijk niet veel meer dan een maandelijkse publicatie gewijd aan architectuur, constructie en ornamentatie. In werkelijkheid had het een veel bredere impact. Gedurende veertien jaar zou Wendingen een forum zijn voor eigentijdse kwesties in vele verschillende kunstsectoren. Het tijdschrift was bovendien een kunstwerk op zichzelf. Tussen 1918 en 1932 verschenen er 116 nummers, waarvan alle omslagen staan afgebeeld in dit boek. Wijdeveld was een groot voorstander van samenwerking en gedachte-uitwisseling tussen kunstenaars. De omslagen werden dan ook ontworpen door talloze toonaangevende kunstenaars uit die tijd.
